Kids + Technology
I recently read this article called "On Screen Time" by Stephanie over at Barefoot in the Kitchen. It was totally thought provoking so I thought I'd share. This part really resonated with me:
"... Limiting screen time doesn't necessarily work. The author suggest that it is all about scarcity and abundance, and how making screen time feel like a treat makes everything else you want your kids doing (like reading or playing outside) seem like broccoli."
Stephanie is referencing this article on why limiting screen time doesn't necessarily work. Check it out! What do you think?
Yes, technology plays such an important and worthy role in our kids lives... just like reading, playing outdoors, exploration and imagination! It's a balancing act and a game of moderation, just like anything in life. At my house there are good and unacceptable times to use the iPhone or iPad, just like there are good and unacceptable times to run around in your underwear and scream at the top of your lungs. What works at your house?
P.S. Photo of Nina found from 2012.
P.P.S. Here are a few of Nina's fav apps. Mae's not quite there yet. ;)
KidGlyphs
PBS Kids
Peekaboo series, i.e. Barn, Presents and Fridge
Elmo Calls
Toca Boca Pet Doctor
Toca Boca Hair Salon
Little Writer by Alligator Apps
Puzzles - none in particular, she just LOVES any puzzle apps
P.P.P.S. In case you're curious, my guess is on the iPad for a TOTAL of 1 hour/week on average. She's only 3, so she'll play for 5 minutes here or 10 minutes there. Her attention span is often that of a, errrr, well, ummm... 3 year old.
